A busy Bolton road urgently needs speed cameras after the latest serious crash according to residents and campaigners.
Three people were injured, one of them seriously, after a crash on Halliwell Road at the end of January.
The cause of the crash is still be investigated but has sparked calls for more to be done to make the road safer.
Naz Vander, who started the petition, said: “The issue is that it’s a very busy road and we have a lot of foot fall here with the local community using the mosque, the bank and a lot of local businesses.”
She added: “Speed cameras would just slow everything down, we’ve got a lot of elderly people here so it really has caused a lot of concern.”
Ms Vander has been handing out paper copies to homes and businesses along the road and has also set up an online version.
She hopes to see cameras installed at the area around the Lloyds bank as well as further down on Halliwell Road.
The crash, which happened just after 9pm on Saturday January 28, is believed to have involved three vehicles opposite a branch of Lloyds Bank.
A vehicle travelling along Halliwell Road towards Moss Bank Way is believed to have hit a second vehicle turning onto Halliwell Road, and a third parked, unoccupied vehicle.
One person was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while two other people suffered minor injuries, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Two people have since been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.
Cllr Rabiya Jiva, who represents Crompton on Bolton Council, says that she hopes lasting action will be taken in the wake of the crash.
She said: “The accident that took place is definitely a reminder that we have to take measures to stop this happening again and I will certainly help the residents to address this behaviour in any way we can.”
She added: “Also I would urge people using this road to please think about other people before they get behind the wheel.”
The speed cameras idea has also won the approval of Safwaan Patel and Kevin Morris who are both standing for the ward in this year’s local elections.
Mr Patel said: “There’s a massive issue around here with uninsured drivers and speeding and we need a bigger police presence to help deal with it, especially in the evenings.”
He added: “When we talk to people in the community everyone agrees that something needs to be done, people understand that this is an issue which effects everybody.”

They say this is an issue that has been raised time and again in the area and they have also said that other traffic calming measures should be explored.
Mr Morris said: “Something needs to be done.”
He added: “Otherwise it feels like just a matter of time until someone is killed.”
