Five men were arrested for a variety of offences throughout the day as police engaged in a town centre operation yesterday, Monday, January 30.

The operation in partnership between Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) was focussed on Bolton town centre, with a particular focus on the town's travel links.

The aim of the Greater Manchester TravelSafe Partnership, a TfGM spokesperson said, was to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour (ASB) in the area".

Police claimed a successful day, with a range of offences dealt with.

A spokesperson for GMP Bolton South said: "Good news. The town centre neighbourhood team and the transport unit have had a productive day today in the town centre.

"Five adult males have been arrested throughout the day for various offences including shoplifting, possession of class A drugs, possession of class B drugs, and begging."

The latest instalment of the operation comes after five young people were arrested in relation to abusive behaviour in Bolton Interchange and Market Place last week.

The Greater Manchester TravelSafe Partnership also targeted Bolton in a mass operation in the lead up to Christmas last year.

In total officers spoke to 12,000 members of the public, with Metrolink staff issuing 600 fines to passengers who failed to produce a valid ticket.

Police stopped and searched 18 people with officers making seven arrests for a range of offences including possession of drugs and weapons, aggressive begging, and being drunk and disorderly.

A high-risk missing person was also located and returned to safety during the operation.
