A pub part-owned by Bolton acting great Sir Ian McKellen has been rapped by its local council in its latest food hygiene visit.

Sir Ian, 83, part-owned The Grapes pub in London, which is almost 500 years old and Grade-II listed.

The Lord of the Rings star's pub was awarded a three-star rating by its local council following the inspector's visit, down from its previous rating of five.

According to a report, there were a number of issues found during the inspection. 

There was a 'lot' of expired food in the working fridge, including noodles 19 days out of date, chicken curry and salmon, both 12 days out of date, and spiced tomatoes, which were 10 days out of date.

Additionally, a second fridge was broken and operating at 16C - at least 11C over the top temperature of a normal working fridge.

All food from the broken fridge was thrown away by the council officials. 

Furthermore, antibacterial soap was also found not to be available in the kitchen and a shelf the chopping boards were stored on was dirty. 

The council has recommended a temperature probe should be bought within a week to check the temperature of stored food and the seals on the fridge doors, which were broken, should be fixed.

Sir Ian has owned the pub with business partner Sean Mathias and Evgeny Lebedev, the son of a Russian oligarch and former KGB agent.
