Bolton schools like to inspire their pupils inside and outside the classroom.

And this was most certainly the case for 10-year-old Alfie McHugh, who was inspired by a homework task to make a difference in his hometown by embarking on a 10 mile walk.

The St Mary's RC Primary School, Horwich, pupil was asked to create a sponsor form and come up with an idea to raise money for charity.

Alfie told The Bolton News: "I was thinking of doing some kick ups at first and a run, but in the end me and my dad decided to do a walk to Bolton town centre and back.

“People with charities are helping the less fortunate so I wanted to do something to help so they don’t have to worry every day.”

His dad Steven accompanied him on the hike from his home in Lostock to Bolton town centre and back.

Alfie raised £200 for Urban Outreach.

He said the first part of the walk was fairly easy, but that he developed cramps in his legs by the end.

Alfie added: “When my dad woke up the next day his legs were hurting, but we did enjoy it and it was for charity.”

Alfie and his dad walked from behind the fire station in Horwich to Lostock, China Gardens, down Chorley New Road and back home again.

His mum Natalie says she is “extremely proud” of him.

She said: “He wanted to do something that would be a challenge to himself whilst raising money.

“He’s only 10 and this is a big thing for him.

“I am extremely proud of him.

“He’s never walked that far before or done anything for charity.”

Alfie is also head boy at his school.

The Bolton News:

Natalie added: “He’s very active and likes to do well at school.”

Alfie’s class also took part in the fundraiser, with some putting on cake sales, runs, and more.

Class teacher Lucy Gubbins said: “It’s really wonderful.

“Part of our Catholic teaching is to support our community.

“We were talking as a class, and they chose Urban Outreach, Bolton.

“Children ran with it and worked individually and in smaller groups and came up with their own ways to raise money.

“It’s just exactly what we want from our pupils.

“I am very proud of him and all the class.”
