The installation of a pedestrian crossing on a notorious road has been welcomed.

The crossing will be on Chorley New Road, near to the junction with New Hall Lane and in close proximity to both the Bolton School Foundation and Clevelands Preparatory School.

It is hoped that measure will improve the safety not only for pedestrians wanting to cross, but also for cyclists and motorists on a road that has seen multiple collisions and fatalities in recent years.

Cllr Andy Morgan, who represents the Heaton and Lostock ward, has described the installation of the pelican crossing as “a good move”.

He added: “It’s a welcome addition to Chorley New Road. We’ve been wanting it for years.

“It means it’ll be safer to cross the road for pedestrians, particularly pupils at Bolton School and Clevelands.

“But it’s for everybody. It’s about making the roads accessible for everyone – be it cars, cyclists, or pedestrians.

“It’s got to be appropriate for everyone on the roads so that everybody can use the roads safely.

Cllr Morgan says that a request for hatching – a keep clear box – at the entrance to New Hall Lane has been requested by the council, which the highways department has agreed to “take a look at”.

“It will keep it clear when the crossing is in operation and would mean people can still access New Hall Lane,” Cllr Morgan added.

Head of foundation at Bolton School Philip Britton say they welcome any measures that make Chorley New Road safer for pedestrians.

He added: “A large number of our pupils who live locally walk to school and Leverhulme Pavilion sports field is busy with young people all the time.

“Making people feel safe walking to school and crossing the roads will encourage these habits of walking to school when you can.

“We know there are already issues with the timing of the Tudor Road lights that have caused congestion ever since those were changed a year or so ago and we hope that planners have given careful thought to traffic flow as well.”
