An apprentice working on one of Bolton's biggest project is certainly laying the foundations of a successful career.
Jake Hough is the first apprentice to be taken on as part of the £20M build in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Bolton Medical College of Sciences plan was approved last year with ground having been broken last October.
The partners behind the project have said it will create jobs and opportunities for young people, the first of which is 17-year-old Bolton College apprentice.
Jake said: “Onsite experience is the best way to learn in my opinion.
“The most exciting part of the BCMS build for me is the modern technology used throughout the building.
“The technology that is being used just fascinates me.
"I also feel privileged to work on a project that will have such a great impact on the local community and the world of teaching.”
Jake is currently studying for a level four site supervisor apprenticeship at Bolton College.
Hewill be joined on-site by trade students at Bolton College who will complete their required work placements at BCMS, in disciplines including plumbing, plastering, electrics and brickwork.
The project is a collaboration between the University of Bolton, Bolton College, Bolton Council and Bolton NHS Foundation Trust with building work being led by Willmott Dixon.
Once it is completed the new college, which is being built on the grounds of Royal Bolton Hospital on Minerva Road, Farnworth will train the next generation of medical professionals in the borough and beyond.
They say that the ambitious project will spend more than £6million on the construction process locally but could generate around £150million for the economy over its lifetime.
Project director Mark O’Reilly said: “Once BCMS is up and running it’s going to provide countless employment opportunities for people in Bolton looking to go into medical and clinical professions.

“But we felt strongly that there was no reason why it couldn’t start generating jobs while under construction, so that’s what we’ve worked with Willmott Dixon to create.
“We hope students at Bolton College and University take full advantage of this opportunity and are proud to be involved in a project of such regional significance.”
The medical college is currently due to open in 2024.
