A Summerseat pub manager will embark on an epic trek across Lancashire with a charity founder to raise money for lifesaving medical equipment.
Owen Sheen, 18, will make the journey from Summerseat to Blackpool next month to support charity Rammy Restart a Heart, which raises money to install defibrillators in communities across the region.
Owen, who manages the Hamers Arms pub in Higher Summerseat, will walk almost 40 miles from the village the seaside resort with friend and charity founder Sarah Jones, with the aim of raising at least £2,000, enough to purchase one, new defibrillator.
Owen says he got involved with Rammy Restart a Heart as a way of making sure the Hamers Arms served the people of Summerseat.
The charity has already installed a defibrillator at the pub, and is working hard to providethem for as many places as possible.
Owen said: “I wanted to give the pub back to the community, and what better way to do that than with charity.”
“Defibrillators should be a part of every community; they are lifesaving equipment.
“We may all need one at some point in our lives, so it’s a really good thing to raise money for.
The walk will take place on Saturday, February 25, and will see Sarah and Owen trek across rural areas and main roads as they make their way across the region.
Owen said: “At the beginning, we were thinking [of walking to] Manchester, but then we thought ‘no, let’s go further, let’s go to Blackpool.”
“We’re hoping to raise about £2,000 minimum, but I think we’re going to exceed that.”
Owen says that the charity's aim of installing more defibrillators in Summerseat and the surrounding areas has had a great response from the community.
“We know that one [defribrillator] has been used, but it doesn’t matter how many times they’ve been used, its an asset to have in your community.
“Touch wood that you never have to use it, but if it comes to time that it a necessity to save a life, you’re fortunate that it’s there, especially with ambulance waiting times being so long.
“The units that we’re fitting could be the difference between someone seeing their next Christmas and not.”
