A one-month old baby tragically died in Bolton after being found in a distressed state by his mother in his crib, an inquest has heard.

A postmortem examination report was unable to identify a medical cause of death of Jacob Grice who will be “missed by all his family and will remain in their hearts and thoughts for the rest of their lives".

An inquest into his death took place at Bolton Coroners Court.

The court heard he was born in February last year and there were no problems reported in the pregnancy of his mother Chantelle Johnstone.

He was born weighing 2.89kg, which meant he was light at birth.

Jacob was allowed to go home with his mother to Bolton Road, Kearsley, four days after he was born.

On March 24 last year Chantelle went to see him at around 8.45am in his crib.

She found he was a blue colour and called for paramedics and began CPR.

Jacob was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where he died later that day.

A statement from Chantelle said: “The medical staff tried their best for the baby but were unable to save him.

“He is missed by all the family, he will remain in our hearts and thoughts for the rest of our lives.”

Michael Stanton, a doctor who carried out the postmortem, said no cause of death could be identified externally or internally so said this was unascertained.

He was asked whether sudden unexplained death in infancy would be an appropriate conclusion and said it would.

Police said there was nothing suspicious about the death.

Coroner Peter Sigee recorded sudden unexplained death in infancy as the conclusion and offered his condolences to the family.
