Plans to revamp a historic Bolton site into a chain pub are just one option ahead of major investment coming into the town centre.

The proposal to revamp a Yates pub, currently housed in a Grade II listed building on Bradshawgate, into a Slug and Lettuce bar were announced earlier this month.

Now, parent company, the Stonegate Group, has said that they could be considering other ideas for the site as well and are planning to inject a major sum into the business.

A spokesperson said: “We are planning to significantly invest in this business later this year and are currently considering a number of options, including our Slug and Lettuce brand, for the Grade II listed building.

“Keep an eye on the venue’s website and social media for updates.”

The Yates revamp, if approved, will dovetail with several other recent proposals by other developers aimed at revitalising the Bradshawgate area more broadly.

Only last month, a plan was put to the council to transform the long vacant Bar Metro into a new business.

If the Stonegate Group decided to go ahead with the Slug and Lettuce plans then the new bar will make up an integral part of the area’s evening economy.

The company has been considering the revamp because they deem the Slug and Lettuce brand to be "more contemporary and popular" than the site’s previous occupants.

If it does so then the plans will also include changes to the inside of the building including the removal of a podium and stage, installing new timber rafts and seating booths as well as adding to new casing to the staircase.

The new timber rafts and seating booths will be in keeping with Slug and Lettuce features all over the country.

The plans were lodged to the council on Tuesday, January 3 and will be open for neighbourhood consultations until Thursday, January 26.

Because of the building’s heritage, having been built in 1906 and classed as a listed building in 1999, Historic England will also need to be consulted before the plans can proceed.

After the consultation period, the authority’s planning department will decide whether or not to approve the proposal.
