Bolton’s historic Yates’ pub is set for a major refurbishment and relaunch as a Slug and Lettuce bar.
Plans submitted this week outline major internal changes for the listed building on Bradshawgate where generations of the town’s pub-goers have enjoyed nights out.
The proposals include the removal of the internal podium, stage and the reconfiguration of the downstairs bar and server area.
Pub group Stonegate also wish to introduce Slug and Lettuce ‘thematic features’ such as timber rafts and seating booths.
The toilets at the premises would also be upgraded. Planning documents lodged with Bolton Council, said: “The existing Yates’ is a prominently sited local venue and it is the intention to upgrade to the more contemporary and popular Slug and Lettuce brand format.
“Works proposed will respect the building’s heritage status.
“It will help safeguard and future proof the important role it plays both economically and socially in the town,
“The proposed works are expected to improve the experience and comfort of customers and allow the venue to be consistent with the theme of the Slug and Lettuce brand.”
The building has been Grade II listed since 1999 and is described as a ‘wine lodge, built in 1906, terracotta with slate roof’.
The Historic England listing expands on the architectural merit of the building.
It states: “It has three storeys, with a six window range divided 1-4-1 with narrower outer bays forming angle towers with domed roofs, and segmentally
pedimented gable to central bay.
“Outer doorways to ground floor, flanked by single storey extensions with coped parapet linking to main block.”
The refurbishment would also remove recent decorative features and infilling of the ceiling void.
The plans added that the works would ‘reinstate the original floorplan’ of the pub and ‘improve the aesthetic and character’ of the indoor space.
The plans will be considered by Bolton Council is the coming weeks.
