Greater Manchester Police Traffic officers have been clamping down on insecure loads this weekend.

Officers have stopped three separate vehicles close to Bolton for the same offence, two of which were where the M60 meets the M62.

The first was stopped and found to have an insecure load, a truck carrying a car, and was issued a "PG9" whilst it was corrected.

A PG9 is given for mechanical problems or for the condition of a vehicle’s bodywork and equipment. It could have an immediate or delayed effect depending on how severe the defect is but is an order to fix the issue at hand.

A spokesperson said: "The driver was issued a graduated fixed penalty notice (GFPN). When will they learn? All four wheels need securing."

A graduated fixed penalty means that the amount can vary depending on the circumstances or the severity of the offence.

Another was stopped in the same area yesterday for a similar offence.

"A PG9 was issued and prohibited whilst remedied at the site," the spokesperson said. "GFPN was issued for the insecure load.

"Another accident waiting to happen."

Elsewhere on the M62 yesterday there was a further stoppage of a vehicle "carrying telegraph poles with a 4.3-meter overhang".

The spokesperson added: "No rear projection boards, just a hi-vis vest hanging off a pole.

"PG9 and GFPNs issued.

"He also had a loose spade and sledgehammer on top of the fuel tank."
