A kerb on a shopping street has left business owners concerned after it has been the site of injuries and damage to vehicles.

The kerb is on Winter Hey Lane in Horwich, near to the junction with Lee Lane and Church Road.

It separates the pavement and the road, but where most pavements are elevated above roads, the pavement at this point is lower than the road.

Business owners near to the kerb have complained to the council about its safety.

They say that pedestrians have tripped over the step between the kerb and the pavement.

Emma Summerfield, owner of Glassy Garden, said: “The paving is coming away, the council repave it and then the same thing happens again.

“People have tripped over the step and we’ve had to come out and help them, there’s been blood running down the pavement.

“I’ve complained to the council about it.”

She added: “And people pull cars up onto the kerb, not realising it drops down on the other side, and end up damaging the underside of them.

“They’ve almost rolled over when that happens. It leaves a gouge in the kerb as well."

Chloe Ward, owner of Honey Rose salon, said: “To be honest I’ve not seen anything recently as such, but last year we had an old lady fall.

“When cars come swinging round the corner they overshoot it, one almost hit the shop window.

“Bolton Council did come out and do repairs, but it has quickly deteriorated because of the road.

“If you’re trying to get across there, the step is too dangerous. It’s a big risk, definitely.”

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “The kerb at this location is raised due to the footway being lower than the road.

“It is a feature to protect vehicles from leaving the road easily onto the footway. There are parking restrictions in place at this location and it is regularly inspected by our highway officers.”
