Most seven-year-olds cannot wait to open their presents on Christmas but young Ava Roscoe will not be receiving any gifts this year.

For in the true spirit of the season, she has decided that she would rather those in need of support receive her presents instead.

Ava Roscoe, seven, from Deane, decided this year she would not be writing a list to Santa – not for herself, at least.

Mum Kelly says that most years just before Christmas they have a clear out of Ava’s old, used toys, which end up being donated.

This year, however, Ava surprised her mum by requesting that rather than having new gifts bought for her, she would prefer to spread the Christmas cheer elsewhere.

Kelly added: “When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas she was adamant that she didn’t want anything, and she wanted to give her presents away.”

After Ava, who is a Year Three pupil at St Ethelbert’s RC Primary school, revealed her intentions to Kelly, they set about researching charities in the area.

The pair chose Fortalice, a Bolton-based charity which supports people affected by domestic violence.

“I reached out and they sent me a list of things they wanted,” Kelly said. “She wanted to get everything on the list.”

“We got all kinds of things for babies – sensory things, blocks, Lego, dolls prams.

“We also got things for teenagers like socks, perfume, and board games. And we got stuff for the mums too because they often get forgotten about – things like perfume, reed diffusers, pyjamas.

“So, we ticked quite a lot off the list. Friends and family also wanted to help too.”

Proud mum Kelly added: “She’s amazing. I don’t have the words to describe her.

“She’s just the most kind-hearted little girl.”

Kelly says Ava has really enjoyed the experience and anticipates that this could become a regular feature of their festive routine.

“We are so grateful for Ava’s donation of lovely toys, games and books,” said chief executive of Fortalice Gill Smallwood.

“This is a wonderful, kind gesture from someone at such a young age.

“The gifts will make such a difference for the children in Refuge this Christmas.

“A huge thank you to Ava from us all at Fortalice.”
