Councils across Greater Manchester have outlined their plans for dealing with rubbish and recycling over Christmas – with some wheelie bins being collected on different dates.

We have covered the collections affecting residents in Bolton, Atherton, Little Hulton and Walkden as well as Ainsworth Village and Bradley Fold.

With Christmas Day and New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday this year, town halls have confirmed Boxing Day and the bank holidays on December 27 and January 2 are affecting some collection schedules.

Bolton

There will be no collection of food waste containers or green bins between Monday 26 and Friday 30 December.

All households due a collection on Boxing Day (Monday 26 December) should have received a letter.

All the changes can also be found on the council’s website.

The following changes apply to normal collection days:

Monday 26 December (Boxing Day)

Grey bins will be collected on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 December.

Beige and burgundy bins will be collected from Wednesday 28 December to Friday 30 December.

Friday 30 December

There are no changes to waste bin collections between Monday 19 and Friday 23 December 2022 and Monday 2 and Friday 6 January 2023.

Please ensure that your bin lid is closed, and bins are presented at the edge of your property by 7am on the day of your scheduled collection.

Please make sure that your vehicles are parked responsibly to allow our vehicles access to your street.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Nadim Muslim said:

“The holiday period undoubtedly creates more household waste and I encourage our residents to recycle as much of their rubbish as possible.

“Many items such as cardboard packaging from toys and cards can be recycled but be careful when recycling wrapping paper as any embellished or sparkly patterns cannot be recycled.”

Bolton Council will also collect real Christmas trees for a £16 charge. Call 01204 336 632 before Thursday 10 January to arrange a collection.

Alternatively, you can take your tree to the tip free of charge.

Bury

Over the festive period, there are no planned changes to blue – plastic, glass, tins-, green -paper and cardboard – or grey, – general waste – bin collections in Bury.

Brown bins – which are for garden waste – are paused for two weeks from December 26 to January 6 due to reduced garden waste in winter.

“This means collection crews can put extra effort into emptying the other bins which can fill up more quickly at this time of year,” the council states.

Wigan

In Wigan, blue, brown and black bin collection days will stay the same over Christmas, but green bin collections will be suspended between Monday, December 26 until Friday, January 6.

Salford

No changes are planned to bin collection days over Christmas and New Year for Salford residents.

The town hall confirmed that bins will be collected as normal throughout the festive period including the bank holidays on Monday, December 26, Tuesday, December  27 and Monday, January 2.
