A four-year-old girl from Westhoughton has now been discharged from intensive care, after 'fighting for her life' with a Strep A infection.

Camila Rose Burns was admitted to Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital just over two weeks ago, with her parents at her side every step of the way.

She has now been out of intensive care for four days, and is currently on a specialised ward, where Camila is receiving dialysis and antibiotics.

Camila is also being monitored for the effects of the sepsis shock on her hands and feet.

Her parents Dean and Kaye said: “We still don’t know the full damage yet or what surgery will be needed.

“We need to wait and give her more time to recover.

“Despite all this we can still get a smile out of her, and she is talking about dinosaurs and watching CBeebies in her hospital bed.

“She is starting to eat again but doesn’t have much of an appetite yet.

“Her first request was chicken nuggets of course.

“She is still very poorly, and we have a long way to go and a few hurdles to cross, but we are getting there slowly, and she is just the bravest little girl I know.

“So, for now, we are here at, quite possibly, the best children’s hospital in the country.”

The family also thanked the hospital staff for “saving their special girl”.

They added: “The team at Bolton Hospital who worked so hard and spent hours to keep her with us and able to be transferred to Alder Hey, and the North West and North Wales Transport Service (NWTS) who safely transferred her.

“Every single person in Alder Hey PICU who we can only describe as real-life superheroes.

The Bolton News:

“The care and support Camila and the whole family have had from Alder Hey has been incredible.”

Camila has also been well entertained with a musician playing a harp in her room yesterday morning.

And she has also been visited by Father Christmas who told her how brave she was and asked her what she wanted for Christmas because she has most definitely been on the good list.

She asked for a big dinosaur.

Dean and Kaye said: “Thank you so much again to everyone for everything.

“Thank you for all your prayers and kind words, and for all your support.

“We are overwhelmed by the love and support we have been shown and we appreciate all of it. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“I’d love for you to please continue to pray for our beautiful girl to fully heal and get better, and back to how she was before so we can all go back home together.”

Strep A bacteria can cause many different infections, ranging from minor illnesses to serious and deadly diseases.

The bacteria are commonly found in the throat and on the skin, and some people have no symptoms.

Infections cause by Strep A include the skin infection impetigo, scarlet fever and strep throat. Scarlet fever in particular has seen a recent surge in cases.

While the vast majority of infections are relatively mild, sometimes the bacteria cause life-threatening illness called invasive Group A Streptococcal disease.

The family have also asked for the help of the community to donate knitted/crochet hearts to NWTS to help families cope whilst sick children are taken to intensive care units.

Crochet hearts can be purchased from here, and delivered to NWTS, Room 005, Newton House, Birchwood Park, Faraday Street, Risley, Warrington, WA3 6FW.
