A wheelchair rugby Paralympian has received his MBE from the Prince of Wales.

Gold medallist Ayaz Bhuta, from Halliwell, was in London to get his MBE formally from Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, December 7.

The rugby champion donned his best for the occasion after he was awarded the honour for his inspiring character as a member of the England wheelchair rugby team in Tokyo last year.

Ayaz, 33, said: “It was an absolute honour to be presented with my MBE medal by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.

Firstly, I'd like to thank the Most High for making all this possible.

“Secondly, I'd like to thank my parents as they have always pushed me and my siblings to achieve success.

“It was an honour to share the day with my dad and sister (others were missed).

“It would have been amazing if my mum was still around to witness the day, may she be granted Jannah.

“I'll always be grateful for the sacrifice my parents made coming to England from India and all the effort they put in to provide for the family, may Allah SWT reward them and lastly, I'd like to thank my siblings and their spouses for their unwavering support.”

Since the Paralympic win, Ayaz has gone on to win Rugbymania and was also awarded a honorary doctorate at the University of Bolton for services to sport and the community.

Ayaz added: “During the ceremony I was fortunate to say a few words to His Royal Highness but this one moment I'll never forget.

“I mentioned to him that I work in schools and do some community work trying to change the negative perception of people with disabilities in the South Asian community and he raised his eyebrows whilst saying ‘oh really?’

“I'm glad I got the opportunity to raise awareness at the highest level.

“I hope me being presented with this prestigious award changes the way disability is perceived in the South Asian community.
