Fines totalling £5,000 have been handed to four people convicted of fly-tipping and other waste offences in Bolton.

Keenan Dauneey, of Hamilton Street, was found guilty dumping a double mattress, flooring, and several black bags at the side of his house.

In the defendant’s absence, magistrates imposed a fine of £880 and ordered him to pay £962 costs and a victim surcharge of £352.

Angela Guffogg, of Ainsworth Lane, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping a sofa outside a recycling facility.

She was fined £233 and ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £93.

Marek Rafael of Alston Street dumped waste including a mattress. He was fined £880 and ordered to pay £485 costs and a victim surcharge of £352.

Each of these defendants was initially issued with a fixed penalty notice, but after failing to pay their cases were heard at Bolton Magistrates Court on Monday, November 28.

Also in court was Karen Moran, of Mango Place, Salford, who pleaded guilty to using an unlicensed carrier to remove her waste which was subsequently dumped in Moses Gate.

She was fined £120, ordered to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough, deputy leader of the council, said: “These recent cases serve as a reminder that fly tipping will not be tolerated in Bolton.

“If you dump waste illegally you may find yourself in court with a substantial financial penalty.

“If you pay someone to dispose of your waste, it is vital that you check they are a registered waste carrier to ensure the waste is disposed of in the correct manner.”

You can find a registered waste carrier in your area on the Environment Agency’s website. 

In 2022 Bolton Council has issued 82 fixed penalty notices and taken 26 individuals to court for fly tipping offences.
