Bolton is set for a spell of sub-zero temperatures with as snow is predicted throughout the nation.

The council has its gritters at the ready which will head out this evening, Monday December 5, for a full route grit at 7pm.

Gritters are likely to continue throughout the week and into the weekend as temperatures are set to get continually colder in that time, according to the Met Office,

The Met Office and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have issued a severe cold weather alert for England, as they warned the plummeting temperatures could increase health risks to vulnerable people and disrupt deliveries.

The Met Office's forecast until Sunday

Monday - Overcast and cloudy throughout the day with a minimum night time temperature of 2C

Tuesday - Cloudy with sunny intervals then a clear night. Day time highs of 5C and night time lows of -1C.

Wednesday - Sunny day and clear night. Day time highs of 3C and night time lows of -3C.

Thursday - Sunny day and clear night. Day time highs of 1C and night time lows of -5C.

Friday - Sunny day and clear night with some cloud. Day time highs of 0C and night time lows of -4C.

Saturday - Misty over night into cloudy day with sunny intervals followed by a foggy night. Day time highs of 2C and night time lows of -3C.

Sunday - Foggy throughout the day and night. Day time highs and night time lows of -3C.

Some other areas of the UK are expected to see temperatures of -10C and some places in norther Scotland have been issued a yellow weather warning for snow on Wednesday.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Rebekah Sherwin said: “Temperatures will start to dip this week, with daytime temperatures struggling to get above freezing in many places from mid-week onwards.

“However, the cold air from the Arctic will also bring brighter conditions, with some dry, sunny spells in many areas, particularly away from the coast.

“Showers will turn more wintry as the week goes on with a risk of snow at times."
