Bolton’s most high-profile union activist has given her backing to an innovative charity that supports domestic violence victims.
Endeavour, based on Chorley Old Road, is a women led organisation that works to support all kinds of people who have been affected by domestic abuse.
Their vital work has now been boosted thanks to Bolton-based Unison president Andrea Egan, who has nominated the organisation as her 'presidential charity.'
Ms Egan said: “I have been an activist in the women’s movement all my working life, fighting on many platforms for the rights of women, and through my job role seeing the impact that domestic violence has on women and their families.
“My roles as a worker and an activist are not exclusive and I have seen first-hand the work and services that Endeavour offer.”
Every year the president of Unison, Britain’s biggest trade union which represents public sector and health service workers, chooses a charity to support.
With the presidency now held by a Bolton-based activist in Andrea Egan, it made perfect sense for her to support a local organisation close to her heart.
Endeavour was founded by a group of women working in the domestic abuse support sector and since then has become one of the borough’s most valued charities.
Though still women-led, the group also supports male victims and people from LGBTQI+ backgrounds.
Endeavour has also led the way with its innovative pet fostering service, which helps people to flee from abusive relationships without having to surrender their pets.
The organisation also runs specific projects to help younger people, and people at risk of trafficking or honour-based abuse.
The volunteers and support workers behind Endeavour say that this cuts to the core of their philosophy, the idea that help is available to all regardless of their background or circumstances.

Ms Egan says it was this that appealed to her as a trade unionist and socialist.
She said: “What stands out for me with The Endeavour Project is they will not leave anyone behind, a principle strongly associated with the trade union movement.
"They have a range of services, and I could not be prouder to have The Endeavour Project as my Presidents Project.”
