A school which children enjoy coming to has been marked good with outstanding features.

Devonshire Road Primary School was given the rating by the education watchdog following an inspection in October this year.

The school was said to be  ‘outstanding’ when it comes to the personal development of children.

A team consisting of Ofsted inspectors Sophie Murfin and David Lobodzinski and led by His Majesty’s Inspector Claire Cropper found happy pupils who “enjoy coming to school”.

The report stated: “Older pupils nurture younger pupils and children in the early years in their role as play leaders. Pupils carry out roles of responsibility with pride. They said that there is always someone to talk to if they have any worries or concerns.”

Inspectors also found that leaders have designed an “ambitious curriculum” in which pupils’ interests are captures and that enables them to achieve well.

“Leaders provide clear guidance and support for teachers in most areas of the curriculum,” the inspectors found. “This ensures that staff have the support that they need to deliver these subject curriculums effectively.

“However, in a small number of subjects, teachers are less clear about how to build on what pupils already know.”

Headteacher Emma Hodge say they are very pleased with the report, particularly being found to be outstanding at personal development.

She added: “It is a reflection of the hard work and dedication we see from our fabulous staff team each day. They work tirelessly to ensure that our children are receiving the best care and education possible.

“Recent years have obviously posed many challenges for the development of our children. However, we are proud of how our school community have pulled together to support each other through these times and especially proud of our children for how they continue to bounce back.

Devonshire Road’s Key Stage Two maths results put the school, in the top five per cent of schools in the country for progress last year.

Mrs Hodge added: “Devonshire Road Primary School has a strong community heart at its centre.

“We have excellent leadership from a strong board of governors and we work closely with families to get the best outcomes for children.

“Regular uniform swaps, food parcels for those who need them, weekly coffee and conversation mornings for parents and carers and dozens of trained parent volunteers who help our children learn how to read are just some examples of the way we build links with home.

“We will continue to work together in bringing out the best in everyone and in ensuring that our children follow our three school rules at all times – ‘be kind, be curious, be the best you can be’.”
