A new operation has been launched to tackle what police have termed ‘neighbourhood’ crime.

This includes vehicle related theft, domestic burglary, theft from the person - including pickpocketing - and robbery of personal property.

Under Operation Acquire, Bolton has its own team of officers ‘proactively seeking and arrest criminals’.

The operation was launched over the weekend and resulted in a warrant being executed in Bolton for the 'theft of a motor vehicle' and a vehicle in the town was seized by neighbourhood officers.

The day of action to mark the launch of the new operation led to 37 arrests across Greater Manchester.

Chief Superintendent Emily Higham said: “Neighbourhood day of action was a success, it is important for the public to see heightened resources targeted to tackle the crimes that mean the most to those in the community.

“As well as making 37 arrests across the force, neighbourhood officers conducted over 50 crime prevention activities in locations across Greater Manchester.

"It is equally as important that officers are out talking to the public and ensuring that people are aware of crime prevention advice to protect their homes and belongings, this is especially vital during this season."

As part of the prevention work, officers will be speaking to communities, handing out leaflets and offering advice on how to keep safe and their belongings secure.

Ch Supt Higham, GMP lead for neighbourhood crime, said: “It is imperative that every victim and the communities across Greater Manchester are left assured by our response to this type of crime.

“We are committed to tackling the crimes that affect our communities the most and will make arrests and bring those who have offended to justice.

“Operation Acquire allows us to dedicate officers and staff to hotspot areas on days of actions across the month to proactively conduct warrants and arrest offenders.

“The teams have been dropping leaflets with crime prevention advice to protect yourself and your home in darker nights.”

“Don’t give burglars a window of opportunity - close and lock windows when you’re not in.

"I would urge members of the public to promote and join a Neighbourhood watch scheme in your area, visit www.ourwatch.org.uk to sign up.

“If you have any intelligence, however small you think that is, please contact us or inform Crimestoppers on 0800 555 1111."

Cllr Mudasir Dean, Bolton Council portfolio holder for Stronger Communities, said: “There definitely needs to be more investment into that, whether it’s more officers or officers being given more time chasing and following up crimes and carrying out thorough investigations.

“That is what is needed and is the direction police are moving in.”
