Hundreds of people gathered in Victoria Square today (Sunday November 13) to remember the fallen war heroes of two world wars and other conflicts.

Veterans and army cadets marched to the rhythm of drums as trumpets played and flags were raised.

They were greeted with rounds of applause from crowds of people surrounding the town hall steps.

The service was led by Reverend and vicar of Bolton, Dr Chris Bracegirdle, who read a range of prayers out, as well as leading the public in a range of hymns.

Dr Bracegirdle said: “We remember those who lived and died in service and for all those who suffered in war.

“This comes at a particularly poignant time, where there is also a war in Ukraine.

“Allow them to live in this peace.”

Other organisations who laid wreaths and came to show their support included Bolton NHS Trust, the University of Bolton, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services, Greater Manchester Police, and several councillors.

Members of the public were also invited to come and visit the memorial to remember the loved ones they had lost, as well as a march throughout the town centre.

Cllr Chris Hill previously served in the Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and said it was a “great honour” to be there.

He added: “To be a part of this and to see such a great turn out is so amazing.

“My son was also in the parade in the cadets.”

Retired nurse Indria Tailor from the Bolton Hindu Forum came to remember all the nurses and health care professionals who also lost their lives.

She said: “It’s been fantastic.

“I’ve been doing this for the last five years.

“It’s so nice to remember the people who really fought, and all the other people outside of England who fought.

“I am here to remember all the nurses and health professionals who lost their life through war.”

Gaskell Primary School, Rumworth School, Bolton Islamic Girls School, along with many other schools, scout members, and brownie members joined the parade.

Leader of Bolton Council Cllr Martyn Cox said: “It was a really good and moving service.

“We remember those who continue to serve, who have served, and most importantly whose who never came back.

“It’s not just here in the town centre, it’s right across Bolton.”

Armed Forces Champion for Bolton Council, Cllr Andy Morgan, a veteran who served with the Army Air Corps, said “Remembrance Day is so important.

“It is amazing that the public of Bolton continues to come together in huge numbers every year to remember those that have served and continue to serve.

“On behalf of all veterans and serving military personal and their families I would like to thank the public for their attendance, it means so much to us all”.

MP for Bolton South East Yasmin Qureshi came to lay a wreath at the cenotaph, along with the mayor, and lieutenants.

She said: “So many people died in the war, and I think it’s important that we remember.

“This day, as they say, ‘we must remember the past so as to not make the mistakes in the future.

“It is just as important as it was then because we still have wars going on in the world.”
