Police taped off a road in Farnworth in the early hours of today.
The cordon was in place on Peel Street near Market Street until the afternoon, say residents.
Neighbours say they saw crime scene investigators and there is speculation in the area as to what has happened, but nothing has been confirmed.
Locals said police were not revealing the nature of the incident.
One resident said they saw a ‘lot of blood’ on the street, it is not known whether this is connected to the incident.
One told The Bolton News: “The cordon was in place from the early hours until 2pm.
“Forensics were putting down yellow markets but the police wouldn’t tell us anything.”
A ward councillor said he approached officers after being contacted by worried residents about the incident.
Cllr Nadeem Ayub, said: "I went down there this morning and asked the police what was going on because I had residents call me and they didn't tell me anything.
"The police officer that was there said something had happened but she didn't have the information so she couldn't give me any information.
"I'm not sure what happened but it was cordoned off and there were forensic people there too but I don't know what happened.
"The police couldn't give me information at the time."
The Bolton News has contacted police for a response.
