A Bolton Ukrainian group is hosting a HOPE, Help Other People Eat, campaign to commemorate Holodomer.

This year Ukrainians around the world will commemorate the start of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-33 in which millions of innocent men, women and children lost their lives through forced starvation.

And now the Ukrainian community in Bolton has established a Campaign of HOPE – Help Other People Eat - in memory of the victims of the 1932-33 Holodomor.

Through kindness and compassion, they want to keep the victims eternal memory alive in a positive way.

The community has decided to help people in the local area who are struggling by donating to local food banks to bring some measure of help to those who would otherwise go hungry.

Yaroslaw Tymchyshyn, Chairman of the Bolton Branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, said: "Commemorating the Holodomor is particularly poignant this year, when Ukraine is under renewed attack from Russia, which is ruthlessly destroying civilian infrastructure to create a humanitarian disaster in the hope that Ukrainian people will not be able to withstand or survive the winter.

"Russia’s war on Ukraine is also contributing to the economic difficulties that many in the UK are facing.

"Our campaign will also allow us to give back to the people of the UK and express our gratitude for the incredible support that this country has given this year to the Ukrainian people and to Ukraine.

"The men, women and children who so tragically lost their lives through starvation in the Holodomor of 1932/33 had no choice, no care, no help and were shown no compassion.

"As we approach the day of mourning for the victims of the Holodomor on November 26, we honour their memory through our foodbank donations to those in need, to help achieve the aim of a world where no-one suffers from hunger ever again."

AUGB Bolton branch, in co-ordination with Bolton Urban Outreach, are working together to assist those needy in Bolton especially with the cost-of-living crisis.

They are asking residents who can also spare donations to drop them off at the Urban Outreach centre on Trinity Park Estate in the first instance or at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre at 99 Castle Street.

Urban Outreach is open 9 till 5, Monday to Friday, whilst the Ukrainian Cultural Centre is open 3.30 till 11.00, Monday to Friday and 12.00 till 11.00, Saturday and Sunday.

If you are delivering to Bolton Urban Outreach, organisers ask for people to state that their donation is for the Ukrainian Memorial Appeal.

The final day of receiving donations is Friday November 24 at Bolton Urban Outreach and Sunday November 26 at the Ukrainian Centre.
