Despite plans to introduce new electric charging points in Bolton, the town is still considered the worst place to own an electric car.

A new study by the International Drivers Association has revealed that Bolton is the worst area in the UK to own an electric car.

With a total of 24 public charging devices across the area and a population of 288,248, this is the lowest in the country.

But Bolton has started to look at the demands as in October, plans were revealed to transform Meadows Service Station on Bury Road with six electrical vehicle charging points included.

The figure has not changed since April when it was revealed Bolton was down to 24 electric charging points from 28 previously.

Bolton residents have, however, installed 748 at-home charging points through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme as of January 1.

The scheme gives applicants a 75 per cent grant towards the cost of installing the charging point up to £350.

There have also been 80 charging points installed at workplaces around Bolton.

Many have opened at petrol stations, with plans being revealed in February this year for a charging point to open on Manchester Road at the Esso Petrol forecourt.

Motor Fuel Group said in a planning statement in support of the proposals that it is ’embarking on an ambitious nationwide programme of electric vehicles (EV) charging infrastructure’.

A spokesman said: “The re-development of the site is proposed for the creation of a new EV charging hub with new sales building, new jet wash facility and car care facility.”
