A beautiful tribute to the fallen has been created in time for Remembrance Day in Astley Bridge.

Residents and councillors have decorated the area with poppies on lampposts and a scene on Andrew Lane, with a purple horse, poppies, a solider and a poppy wreath.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough alongside residents, Lynn from Classy Wrap, Debra Openshaw and Lisa Oakley, and others have created the display.

Cllr Fairclough said: "Residents of Astley Bridge have always been hugely supportive of Remembrance Friends of Astley Bridge and local councillors always go that extra mile to show respect to those who have given their lives so that we remain safe.

"We always do the poppy on a lamppost to raise money for the Royal British Legion, over the years we have raised over £10,000 for this worthy charity.

"We have a small band of helpers who go out to put up the poppies, out in all weathers making sure they are all up in time.

"We also do a fantastic display on our community space at Andrew Lane, this is always spectacular but this year we have excelled ourselves and its all down to local people working hard to produce this community display.

"Lynn from Classy Wrap has created some wonderful displays for many years, this year she wanted to include the sacrifice made by many of the animals that helped during the wars.

"This year we were so lucky to have two talented sisters contributing to our displays.

"Debra Openshaw and her sister Lisa Oakley crocheted the stunning soldier and poppy wreath which certainly made my efforts come alive.

"And to complete our trio we pay tribute to the Army, the Navy and the Airforce.

"This was put together by my husband Don, who does much of the fetching and carrying.

"This year I think is our best display we have had hundreds of compliments and it has really brought out community together.

"I am so proud to live and represent Astley Bridge, it is an honour to coordinate these displays, we do of course do displays for Christmas, Easter, and commemorative events, so watch out for the Kings Coronation in May 2023."

Cllr Fairclough said it is a shame the display is being impacted by a 5G mast which has made the area look 'unpleasant'.

She spoke to the Bolton News earlier this week, the story can be found here.
