A new café on the walking trails in Rivington will provide a much needed pitstop for ramblers.
Situated close to the Pigeon Tower at the top of Rivington Terraced Gardens, Fika opened its doors the public last Wednesday, October 26.
The space that is inside the old public toilets has been renovated – a job which took owner Will Chambers around four months to complete.
“It was all our own design and we built it,” he said.
Serving coffees and other hot drinks, alongside a menu of cakes and paninis, the café has be welcomed by hikers on their way through.
Will, who comes from Bromley Cross, said: “It’s been really good so far. We’ve been really busy. Lots of people are getting to know where it is.
“People are really ready for a drink by the time they get up here.
“It’s gone as well as we could have hoped so far.”
The menu is due to extend as they begin to find their feet. They have already dabbled with a Halloween themed menu and will looks to add soups and sandwiches.
“We’re building it up at the minute. We’re just seeing what works,” Will said.
Will has managed café in the past and said he jumped at the chance when he found out about the site’s availability.
“When we heard that this place was available, we got in touch with Rivington Heritage Trust and it’s just gone from there.”
The name itself is inspired from Will’s travels.
He said: “Fika is a Swedish phrase. It means ‘going for coffee and cake with friends’.
“It’s all about taking a minute to enjoy the good things in life, and that’s what we do.
“I learnt about it on my travels in Sweden and I thought, ‘that’s a really cool name’.
“It’s quite on trend at the minute, actually. Lorraine was talking about it on the telly recently.”
The café is currently open Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 4am.
