A couple from Bolton have transformed a Horwich pub to place it at the heart of the community.
Gill Jackson, from Bromley Cross, and Martin Smyth, from Bolton, only took over the Victoria and Albert pub last week as managers -and they have already started to put their mark on the place with a whole new look.
They have created a cosy feel the to the pub with a wood fire and candles on each table to create traditional welcoming feel.
Gill said: “I’ve always really enjoyed being in the industry.
“I love working with the day-to-day aspect and the customers.
“We just want to create somewhere that people feel safe to have a drink, where people don’t have to worry about fights, or their drinks being spiked."
She said her aim was to ensure the pub develops a good reputation throughout the community.
Gill says that she is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the pub.
The couple previously ran The York in Bolton town centre for seven years, but decided to take a break from the industry.
Gill added: “Both of us said we wanted to get back in the pub industry, but it was just a case of finding the right one.
“Martin has the gift of the gab and he’s brilliant on the other side of the bar.
“It’s very exciting now we’ve done the refurbishment of it.
“It’s so much different and so much better.”
The pub has been redecorated and cleaned up, with more work still expected to be completed.
The pub also stocks Cask Ales now, which Gill says is something that is hugely popular amongst beer drinkers.
Gill and Martin have already met some of the locals who have all praised them on the new look.
She added: “It’s a family, friendly pub, and we just want everybody to feel warm and welcomed.”
They are also working on bringing in more entertainment, such as having a singer on a Saturday and plenty more entertainment.
