An unlicenced driver who led police on a high-speed chase around Bolton is one of just hundreds arrested for similar offences this year, officers say.
Tyler Huddart, 21, was given a suspended jail sentence and banned from the roads last week after a court heard how he ran several red lights and reached speeds of up to 90mph in a bid to escape police on Sunday July 3 this year.
Now, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Unit have said that his arrest shows how they have made making the roads across Bolton and the wider city region safer a ‘top priority.’
Police Constable Tom Berry said: “Huddart’s level of driving that day was nothing short of appalling.
He had ample opportunity to stop his car and pull over, but he chose not to do so, prioritising his escape from the police over the safety of everybody else.
“It is only thanks to the teamwork and professionalism of the officers involved that the pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion resulting in Huddart being caught and arrested.”
When officers tried to arrest him as he was heading towards Chequerbent Roundabout, Huddart reversed and shunted one of the police cars before speeding off along Wigan Road.
He was eventually caught after trying to make off on foot and was found to have neither licence nor insurance.
Greater Manchester Police have now released dashcam footage showing just how dangerous the chase could have been.
Following his arrest, Huddart, of Rose Hill Avenue, Wigan, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to stop for police officers at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court.
At a sentencing hearing at Bolton Crown Court last week, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work with 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days to go with his four-year driving ban.

PC Berry says Huddart is just one of many dangerous drivers that his unit has taken off the road in recent months.
He said: "Making Greater Manchester’s roads a safer is a top priority for GMP, and this is just one example of the hundreds of arrests made this year by the Roads Policing Unit.
“The Roads Policing Unit will continue to target those drivers who are unlicenced, uninsured and driving under the influence of drink and drugs."
