Roadworks on a busy junction are set to be completed 'imminently' - with only a slight delay having taken place.

Roadworks at the junction of Blackburn Road, Crompton Way and Moss Bank Way were due to be completed at the end of this month (October ).

But engineers state the only work left to complete is traffic signals and overnight resurfacing and white line painting.

Cllr John Walsh, ward councillor for Astley Bridge said the works are to be imminently completed and there is only a slight delay - one week over the original completion date.

He said: "The position is that the signals are being installed as we speak.

"The only work then to be completed will be the resurfacing and that I'm told will be done in early November, but because it requires some night time closures so in order to cause minimum inconvenience it will be done as overnight working in early November which is only next week.

"The final complexion was scheduled only for this week so it's over run by a few days,  but that is only because of the resurfacing and white lining that is necessary but it is effectively operating now without the signals at full capacity because there are some temporary signals but without the full signals it is operating as it will be when the work is finished.

"It should be done in the next week or ten days, it's dependant on the surfacing contractor and the resurfacing work to be finished but I am told that is going to be programmed for early November with some overnight closures to cause minimum inconvenience."

However on the Bolton Council road closure and works page it states there will be temporary traffic lights until January 2023.

Concerns raised after crash on busy Blackburn Road junction

When asking Cllr Walsh about these delays, he said: "That will be the worst case scenario as far as I understand it, that was just in case there was a serious overrun but the signals are being installed and I have had no update to say that those signals will not be operational.

"The last message I got end of last week was the signals will be installed this week and the only work outside of them will be resurfacing.

"Completion should be imminent."

The scheme to improve the junction is designed toreduce congestion and improve safety as well as provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme value is £1.0m and is funded by the GM Growth Deal Fund.

Works started in April.
