A man has confessed to carrying a meat cleaver outside a primary school.

Anthony Hughes, 46, was seen with the meat cleaver outside of St George’s Primary School, Tyldesley on July 15 this year.

He was arrested at the scene after members of the public helped to keep him there before the police arrived.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police at the time said: “We thank the brave actions of the members of the public who detained him prior to his arrest by police, after reports of a man with a bladed weapon close to the school grounds of a primary school on Darlington Street.”

Hughes was charged with possession of a bladed article and affray after his arrest.

He appeared before Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court on Monday July 18 but did not enter a plea and the case was sent to the crown court.

Appearing before Bolton Crown Court via video link from prison this week Hughes, of Darlington Street, Tyldesley pleaded guilty to both charges.

The Honorary Recorder for Bolton Judge Martin Walsh ruled that Hughes will be sentenced once a psychiatric report and a pre-sentence report about him have been completed.

Judge Walsh ordered that Hughes be brought back before the court for sentencing on Friday November 25.
