A final decision has been made on major plans to build a 'Ryder Cup' standard luxury golf course in Bolton.

The Hulton Park scheme will include an 18-hole championship golf course and a total of 1,036 homes with the aim of bringing the renowned golfing tournament to Bolton in 2031.

The plans had initially been thrown out by Bolton Council at a meeting of the authority’s planning committee earlier this year but have now been approved on appeal by national government. 

A statement from the government planning inspectorate said: “The appeal is allowed and full planning permission is granted for restoration works to Hulton Park and various existing structures and heritage assets within it, including the pleasure grounds, dovecote, walled garden and lakes; the demolition of various existing buildings and structures.”

The major works will also include a village centre, a village hall, community allotments, primary school, short stay holiday accommodation.

Supporters of the scheme say that it will bring huge economic benefits to Bolton and that the opportunity to host the world famous Ryder Cup could massively increase the borough’s international prestige.

But opponents fear that it could prove damaging to greenbelt land and that the development will not benefit communities in Bolton itself.
