The borough’s MPs have reacted to the news that Rishi Sunak has been announced as the Prime Minister.

Mr Sunak steps into Liz Truss’ shoes after his last remaining challenger, Penny Mordaunt, backed out of the leadership race.

Mr Sunak became first of the candidates, which included former PM Boris Johnson, to be able to publicly declare that he had 100 MPs backing his claim.

That backing took him over the threshold set out by the 1922 committee last week, which would allow his candidacy to be voted on by the whole Conservative party membership.

However, with none of his competitors being able reach the threshold in the allotted time, Mr Sunak was left as the only candidate. He was announced as the new Prime Minister by chair of the 1922 committee Sir Graham Brady at around 2pm on Monday, October 24.

Following the news, Bolton South MP Yasmin Qureshi once again called for a General Election.

She said: “Rishi Sunak is just the latest in a long line of failed Conservative Prime Ministers.

"It is not the leader of the Conservative party that is the issue, it is the Conservative party itself. They have no plan to address the cost-of-living crisis and the previous Chancellor and Prime Minister trashed the economy and our international standing.

"We need a General Election to let the people have their say."

Chris Green, MP for Bolton West, said: “We continue to go through the strangest of political times but it’s a relief now that we are going to have a new Prime Minister.

“Things are already tough and this winter things are going to continue to be so to have the former Chancellor stepping in ought to show people that those at the top of the party have the expertise to get us through these difficult times.”

Mark Logan, MP for Bolton North East, said: "Congratulations to the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

"Rishi is the person to lead our great country through the cost-of-living crisis in a time of global instability and will be resolute in restoring market confidence.

"He has already demonstrated key attributes to be a great leader.

"He is humble, focused and qualified.

"Judging from my inbox, many residents will be disappointed that Boris Johnson chose to withdraw his bid to return as Prime Minister. Many will recognise the three years of service he gave to our country.

"The fact is we need a new light to guide our country.

"I look forward to working with Rishi to represent Bolton North East and our United Kingdom on the world stage."
