An inquest has opened after a man died in a car crash earlier this month
Simon Edward Bailey was just 34 years old when he died after the horrific crash on Lever Edge Lane, Great Lever in the early hours of Sunday October 2 this year.
Bolton Coroners Court heard how that Mr Bailey was involved in the crash after police gave chase to the car he was travelling in.
Police Coroners Officer Neil McCaffrey said: “There has been a police investigation into this death and that investigation is still ongoing.”
The inquest heard how Mr Bailey, of Cannon Street, Bolton, had been travelling in the car in the early hours.
PCO McCaffrey explained that road police noticed the car, a Nissan Micra, at around 2am and that the driver failed to stop for the officers.
A chase ensued, reaching speeds of up to 67mph and the car became unstable after driving over speed calming measures.
It then mounted the kerb and hit parked vehicles on Lever Edge Lane.
Mr Bailey was able to climb out of the car but collapsed when trying to talk to the officers.
Efforts were made to treat him and perform CPR but Mr Bailey was declared dead at around 3.35am that same morning.
A police cordon remained in place on Lever Edge Lane for the much of the next day as officers remained on the scene investigation, with traffic diverted until the barrier was removed that afternoon.
PCO McCaffrey told the court that Mr Bailey was identified by the officers using his fingerprints and that a post-mortem had been carried out by Dr Charles Wilson.
Dr Wilson gave Mr Bailey’s cause of death as having been brought on by chest injuries.

Coroner Timothy Brennand ruled that an inquest will be held next year to establish the full facts around Mr Bailey’s death.
He ordered that evidence be given by Greater Manchester Police, the North West Ambulance Service and Mr Bailey’s GP.
The inquest has now been adjourned until either a pre-inquest review or a mention, depending on the status of the evidence, on April 21 2023.
