THIS week we launch the first of our new tutorial series involving Lancashire coach Gareth Benson.

He is based at Astley Driving Range, where he heads a team of top quality PGA coaches, and has signed up with The Bolton News to provide a golf clinic in the paper and a video version on this website HERE.

The video is a short clip which shows Gareth demonstrating the correct technique required for each drill.

In his series he will cover a whole range of golf skills and will provide information and articles on a variety of aspects of the game.

Gareth kicks off his first article dealing with a vital aspect of the swing.

ONE SWING WITH ALL CLUBS

1. Your game can vary dramatically from one round to the next. One day the woods are going great and not the irons. The next day it's the opposite.

The irons are flying straight and true but you can't hit the woods.

Let's expel the myth that it's a different swing between the woods and the irons. In reality you will swing a wood on a slightly shallower angle or plane because the club is longer, not because you are making two different swings.

The length of the club and the position of the ball at address will make the very subtle changes in swing angle.

As you can see in the Video, the body movement and swing feel remain the same.

2. With every club in your bag from pitching wedge through to driver, your simple though should be to point the grip end of the club at the ball when you have reached the half way back position. Try to check this in a mirror or window where you can see your reflection. As the left arm reaches to a point that is parallel to the ground, imaging a laser beam shooting from the grip end of the club and that points at the ball.

3. Swinging on the correct plane is the heart beat of your swing. Try placing a spare club along the ground to represent the target line. Hold a medium iron half way down the grip and swing the club half way back. As you swing the left arm across your chest, allow the wrists to hinge and point the grip end at the club on the ground
