Households in Bolton could earn an extra £7,000 plus tax free by taking in a student lodger.
The University of Bolton is urging people to join it 'Rent a Room' scheme to help address the cost of living crisis and the increase in student numbers this year.
Under the government-run initiative, a single person taking in a lodger can earn up to £7,500 per year tax-free.
This year the University of Bolton has a threefold increase in international and postgraduate students this year, which means more needing accommodation.
The University of Bolton is appealing to the local community to consider taking on a lodger under the government's rent-a-room scheme.
Ahmad Khan, at the University of Bolton, said: “It’s a brilliant way of helping your community.
“It provides the opportunity for cultural enrichment for you and your family, while at the same time earning a tax-free income to help with the rising cost of living.
“It also helps to address the increased demand in living space because of the sharp rise in students coming to the university this academic year, especially international applicants.
”We have partnered with the Royal Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Bolton Council and others to help us to promote the scheme.”
Those wishing to take part will need to complete the form, and the university will match students and households
Any agreement made under the scheme is between the person offering the accommodation and the student agreeing to accept the accommodation.
