New faces have been added to an exhibition celebrating the people of Bolton to mark Black History Month.

The Faces of Bolton is a striking exhibition on the walls of the staircase in Bolton Library and Museum

The first new painting is a newly commissioned portrait of Lorraine Walker painted by Tina Ramos Ekongo.

Lorraine was born in Jamaica in 1936.

She came to England in 1960, living first in Wolverhampton and London, before travelling to Bolton.

Once in Bolton, Lorraine got a job with Burton’s, the men’s clothing company.

Lorraine has been an active member within the West Indian community in Bolton since the 1960s.

After her retirement from Burton’s, she volunteered at the Unity Centre in Johnson Street.

Tina is an Equatorial Guinean painter who lives and works in Manchester.

She often creates her vibrant portraits of women by painting on cardboard.

The next face to be added to the wall of Bolton Museum is veteran journalist and broadcaster Clive Myrie which will be showcased on the wall this week.

Clive is a Bolton-born BBC reporter and hosts popular quiz show, Mastermind.

He spent his childhood living opposite Burnden Park, the former home of Bolton Wanderers.

Clive most recently recieved an honorary degree from the University of Bolton and was presented with the degree of Doctor of Social Science for his outstanding contribution to broadcasting, television and society.

This year’s Black History Month sees the Bolton Black History Group working with Bolton Library and Museum Services and the African Community Association of Bolton in a busy schedule of films, exhibitions, workshops and fun activities suitable for all ages and abilities, to mark the experiences and contribution of Black people throughout history.

ACAB will be involved in several events such as face painting, drumming, and drumming workshops, as well as dancing which will take place at the above their office space in all the five Saturdays in October.

Bolton University will host a Black History Month event at the main reception on October 17 from 11am to 2pm.

The Closing Day Celebration will be held at St John Fisher Parish, Kearsley, Bolton BL4 8QQ, on November 4 starting from 4.30pm to 9.30pm.
