Off-duty nurses came to the rescue after a boy walking along the track was hit by a train.
The boy, aged 16, is today fighting for his life in hospital.
It is believed the boy, from Astley Bridge, was walking alongside the tracks when he was struck from behind by the train on Tonge Viaduct.
Off-duty nurses on the 7.58pm Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe service, got off the train to help the injured boy.
They managed to get him on a spinal board and onto the train, which then continued to the junction with Union Road, where an ambulance and paramedics were waiting.
The teenager was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital and remains in the high dependency unit with serious injuries.
The line was closed for several hours, causing disruption for eight services.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious but transport police are investigating the circumstances.
Anyone with information should call 0800 405040.
