A MEMORIAL in 2010 to remember the 344 men and boys killed at the explosion at the Pretoria Colliery is to be funded by Westhoughton Town Council.
The council has agreed to spend £10,000 from its 2008/9 budget on a permanent memorial, to mark the centenary of the disaster. It has also appointed a sub-committee of councillors and members of the public to work on the project.
The exact location and design is to be decided but it will be erected in a prominent position in the town.
The council is also applying for grants from other agencies and charities.
