A social housing company that has properties in Bolton has been subjected to a cyber attack.

Clarion Housing suffered the attack last month and has so far not been able to fully resolve the issue.

The attack and lack of action has left residents somewhat in the dark and unable to access key support services they should be able to access from the social housing company.

With many of her constituents currently residing in Clarion Housing accommodation, Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi has been prompted to speak on their behalf.

She said: "The cyber attack which has impacted a number of my constituents remains unresolved and too many tenants are left in the dark with no real update as to the progress.

“I've written to the government minister responsible to step in and address the issues."

Clarion is Britain’s biggest social landlord, and Ms Qureshi is calling on Minister of State for housing Marcus Jones MP to assist in the matter which is affecting tenants nationwide, not just in Bolton.

A Clarion spokesperson said: “We are sorry for the continued disruption to our services. This is the direct result of a cyber security incident.

“This was a criminal act, so we have notified a number of organisations, including the Regulator of Social Housing, the Housing Ombudsman, the Information Commissioner’s Office and law enforcement.

"We are working urgently with our cyber security partner and other experts to investigate what happened and to restore our systems.

"To do this in a safe and secure way takes time, but more of our services are now coming back online.

“Currently all of our residents are able to book emergency repairs through our phone line and can use our online live chat system to report tenancy issues and some routine repairs.

 “We have contacted all of our residents about the cyber incident and will continue to provide updates when available.

"For the latest information, we encourage residents to visit our website which provides updates on our services and clarifies how to best make contact with us.”
