Customers shared a cuppa with Alice and the White Rabbit of Wonderland fame when they called into their local supermarket.

The tea party was held at the Co-op supermarket in Wigan Road to celebrate the shop's decision to switch all its own-brand tea to Fairtrade suppliers.

Trainee manager, Chris Astley, aged 24, dressed as the Mad Hatter and says the stunt was a great success.

"Everyone had a great time. We had some fun and gave out samples of the new tea. Our customers were really supportive."

He says there was a serious point behind the fun. "Fairtrade is a very important principle to us. It's about helping some of the poorest farmers in the world. If we can sell more fair trade tea it will be better for everyone."

The Co-op will also be offering discounts off all Fairtrade products as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs until March 9.
