A College student, who was one of 17 Wanderers fans needing hospital treatment following baton charges by police at the UEFA Cup tie with Atletico Madrid, spoke of his ordeal yesterday.
Matthew Mather, aged 17, of Horwich, is a construction student at Wigan College. He travelled to last Thursday's match in Madrid with his brother, Anthony, and four friends.
As a result of the police action, Matthew needed eight staples to a wound on his head. Matthew, of Old Vicarage Road, said: "I was hit on the arm at least four times and then I got whacked on my head.
"The police just charged at everyone and I couldn't get out of the way.
"There were people everywhere. It was really overcrowded and they were just whacking everyone."
