A TRAGIC grandad who was crushed under the wheel of a delivery lorry would have been able to be seen by the driver, a jury has been told.
Bolton Crown Court heard how, after reversing his Travis Perkins dropside lorry up Back Bradford Street East, driver 42-year-old Kevin McManus stopped for only 1.25 seconds before pulling forward at slow speed.
Clive Atkinson, aged 65, was walking in front of the lorry and was stuck, suffering unsurvivable injuries after the wheel ran over him.
Giving evidence, police accident investigator Sgt Adrian Pye told a jury that McManus' short stop did not give sufficient time for McManus to properly check his mirrors, including one which gave a view in front of the cab, before moving again.
"As Mr Atkinson walked across the front of the DAF he was available to be seen in the front proximity mirror," said Sgt Pye.
The court heard how McManus, of Elton Avenue, Farnworth, had passed his HGV driving test while in the Army in 2006 and had been employed by builders' merchants Travis Perkins for five years.

At the time of the collision, on the morning of November 28, 2020, he was delivering a load of sand to Mr Atkinson's landlord, Waheed Khalid.
Mr Atkinson had been sat in his van, parked in the street, when the lorry arrived and got out of his vehicle to walk along the side of the HGV as Mr Khalid was talking to McManus about where to unload the sand.
McManus denies causing death by careless driving.
The trial continues.
