Atletico Madrid 0 Wanderers 0 Bolton were holding Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw at half-time in the second leg of their UEFA Cup last-32 tie at the Vicente Calderon.

Leading 1-0 from last week's first leg, Bolton knew a draw would be enough to send them through and they dealt with everything Atletico threw at them during a disappointing first half.

Bolton's only decent chance of the period came from Stelios, who saw his shot tipped over by Christian Abbiati, while at the other end former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia blazed a good opening over for the hosts.

The match kicked off in a half-empty Vicente Calderon stadium.

Bolton lined up with a 4-5-1 formation with Kevin Davies the lone striker.

The first incident of note came in the seventh minute when Joey O'Brien earned the first booking of the match following a tussle with Reyes on the touchline.

Soon after that Atletico managed to get in behind the Bolton defence following a superb threaded pass from Forlan, but Mariano Pernia's low cross was too close to Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Bolton responded to that scare by creating a decent opening of their own, and Atletico goalkeeper Christian Abbiati needed to be alert to tip over Stelios' well-struck drive from the right of the area.

Left-back Pernia was proving Atletico's sole attacking threat early on and he went close with a curling 20-yard effort that was deflected for a corner. Jaaskelainen needed to be brave in the 18th minute when Maxi Rodriguez threatened, while from the resulting corner, the same player saw his thunderous shot from the edge of the area blocked as Atletico started to gain the upper hand.

Forlan had a decent chance to bring Atletico back on level terms on aggregate in the 22nd minute but he headed wide when unmarked 10 yards out.

Away from the pitch, Spanish riot police were called into action following some trouble behind one of the goals where the Atletico fans are normally housed.

It was not immediately apparent what the cause of the trouble was but the majority of the fans standing behind the goal suddenly vacated the area before gradually returning some minutes later.

A flare and some objects were thrown during the incident, while there also appeared to be some punches thrown between spectators before police restored order.

The area behind the goal remained empty for the remainder of the half, though.

On the pitch, Bolton were still thwarting Atletico's attempts to get the breakthrough, although Luis Garcia spurned a gilt-edged chance for the hosts on the half-hour mark when he blazed over at the far post following a cross from Forlan.

In injury-time Luis Garcia had another half-chance after the ball fell kindly to him in the area, but his shot was blocked as the first half finished goalless.
