Bolton: Asda HGV reverses into houses after 'sat nav' wrong turn

The incident happened at 10am today, with residents saying the driver of the Asda HGV knocked on the door of one of the affected houses on Napier Drive to ask the residents to move their car in order to allow him space to turn.

Moments later say neighbours the lorry reversed into their house and the one next door.

Fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

Aleshea David lives in one of the houses which was damaged.

She said: "The distressing bit was that we had the kids here and they saw the whole thing. I've been sick. We're all shaken up."

"We've only lived here six months. We're renting and we don't know what we're going to do now. The kids are scared to be in the house."

"I'm just scared, and I don't know where to go now. It’s just me and my children who live there."

Another resident described a loud bang and felt the whole house shake.

He added: "My whole front porch and my bathroom is all caved in. The structure is all twisted. The porch is going to have to be taken down."

Residents say that lorries frequently get directed up the cul-de-sac. And several drove up whilst the incident was going on today.

One resident said: "I don't want them to open it up as a through road because we've got kids, but they need to put a sign up to stop them coming up."

Watch Manager Michael Shaw at Horwich Fire Station said: "At 10.25am we attended the scene where a HGV from Asda had gone into two houses having gone the wrong way and tried to turn around.

I'm in #Horwich where an #Asda HGV has backed into two houses. The driver tried to do a three point turn after his sat nav took him up the cul de sac.

"We scanned the front and back, made sure everyone was out the house, isolated the gas and put up a cordon.

"There were no injuries, and we were on the scene for between one-and-a-half and two hours."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "I can confirm that at around 10am this morning, officers attended an RTC call at Napier Drive, Horwich.

"It transpired that a lorry had tried to turn in the road and had backed into two houses causing structural damage.

"No injuries were reported."

A spokesperson for Bolton Council has confirmed that two council officers from building control were at the scene.

Asda has been approached for comment.
