AN inquest has been opened into the death of a Westhoughton pensioner who was flung from her bed when a car ploughed into her home last year.

Edna Kearns, aged 92, was taken to hospital suffering from lower leg injuries.

At Bolton Coroner's Court, area coroner Peter Sigee was told that widow Mrs Kearns was at her home in White Horse Grove, Westhoughton, on November 28.

"She was asleep in her bed when a BMW collided with her house," said police coroner's officer Neil McCaffrey.

"The impact of the collision was such that it propelled Edna across the bedroom.

"She suffered serious leg and pelvis injuries and underwent surgery."

The coroner heard that Mrs Kearns, a retired civil servant,  died at the Royal Bolton Hospital on April 8 and a post-mortem revealed her death was due to a blood clot in the lungs and deep vein thrombosis, lower limb injuries and other health problems including Covid 19.

The driver of the BMW, Michael Vose, aged 39, of Mount Pleasant Avenue, St Helens, has admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and the court heard a police investigation is continuing.

No date for a full inquest has yet been set.
