A man has been jailed after an unprovoked ‘one punch’ attack left a father-of-four dead.

Paul Brierly, aged 44 of Hendon Street, Leigh, punched 57-year-old Paul Ologbose, from Leigh, in the early hours of Sunday January 23 outside Higher Fold Sports and Social Club, Kensington Drive earlier this year.

Police were called at around 2am and Mr Ologbose was taken to hospital with a serious head injury where he died later that day.

A statement from Mr Ologbose’s family said: “Although no length of time served will ever be enough to replace what we've lost, we just wanted justice for our dad, who was taken far too soon.

“This tragedy has broken us as a family, and we will always have a huge piece of us missing.

“Always loved forever missed.

“We would like to thank everyone who has reached out and offered their support during this difficult time.”

Mr Ologbose was well known in the community around Leigh for his window cleaning business, which he ran for 31 years, and was noted for always making time for his customers.

An investigation was immediately launched by Greater Manchester Police and Brierly was arrested shortly afterwards.

He was charged with manslaughter on January 25 for which he later pleaded guilty.

Paul Brierly, 44 of Hendon Street, Leigh, was jailed this week

Brought before Manchester Crown Court this week, the Recorder of Manchester Judge Nicholas Dean QC sentenced Brierly to six years and eight months in prison.

Speaking after the sentencing, police officers who investigated the case say they hope this will bring home a stark message about the devastating effects “mindless, unnecessary acts of violence” can have.

Senior Investigating Officer Phil Reade said: “Once again our condolences first and foremost go to the family and friends of Paul who is sadly no longer with us.

“I hope that this sentencing provides some comfort to Paul’s family.

“However, this will undoubtedly affect them for the rest of their lives and this incident should serve as a stark reminder at how these mindless, unnecessary acts of violence can have utterly tragic consequences.”
