Police officers are urging motorists to take extra care when driving near schools.

Police Community Support Officers recently spent time on patrol outside a number of schools in Bolton.

They were Church Road Primary School in Smithills and Brownlow Fold Primary in Halliwell.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police's Bolton West division said: "Please ensure that you drive slowly and carefully around schools and that yourself and your children are wearing seatbelts."

The high visibility patrols prompted parents to ask if officers could visit other schools, saying it makes a difference.

One posted: "When we have a PCSO at our school, as if by magic, people drive and park considerately. It’s amazing."

It comes as police crackdown on motorists behaving irresponsibly.

Police have also conducted speed enforcement checks outside schools previously.

Across the border, police went on patrol outside a primary school to tackle irresponsible parking by parents after concerns by local residents and parents about the safety of the children crossing the busy road.

Officers with the Radcliffe neighbourhood team were at Cams Lane Primary School to warn drivers and speak to those stationed on double yellow lines and school road markings.

Police are also running Operation Portman in Bolton which was launched launched in response to concerns over the number of serious road incidents in the town.

Hundreds of drivers have been reported for different alleged driving offences since the launch of the operation more than 12 months ago.

To help them catch speeding drivers, officers have acquired two laser devices to record speeding vehicles.

Officers said that the operation has resulted in a huge reduction in serious injuries in Bolton.
