Bolton Conservative MP Mark Logan has announced he is quitting Boris Johnson’s government with 'immediate effect'.
His resignation is the latest to hit the PM following the handling of the Chris Pincher “groping” row.
Bolton West MP Chris Green has already said that Mr Johnson’s position looks 'almost impossible' and his Bolton North colleague Mark Logan has now announced he is resigning as parliamentary private secretary to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis.
In a letter to Mr Johnson, Mr Logan said: “The events over an extended period of time have not sat well with me.
“You did deserve a second chance because being prime minister is no easy task, indeed many will agree that you should feel personally proud of your achievements.
“But there is only so much anyone can expect my constituents to accept or ignore.
“Our town was one of the most adversely affected by Covid, too many sacrifices were made during our darkest days.”
“It is out of respect for them, along with our dedicated councillors, public servants and everyone who is focused on making Bolton a better place that I come to this decision.
“They deserve more from leadership.”
The high-profile resignations, following on from health secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak came after Mr Johnson was forced into an apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.
Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
Asked on Tuesday about the prime minister’s likely fate, Bolton West Conservative MP Chris Green admitted it was hard to see how he could carry on after such high profile blows.
He said: “This puts the prime minister in an almost impossible position.
“The question is how long he can go on for and how he can reconstitute his cabinet but that now looks incredible doubtful.”
