Two brothers recently stormed the European championships of radio-controlled car racing.

Luke and Josh Holdsworth, aged 21 and 18 respectively, have been racing ‘RC’ cars for over a decade, having been encouraged into it by their grandfather, Eddie Holt.

They have been competing at the EFRA 1/10th 2WD and 4WD Off Road Euros in Nottingham over the past week.

The off-road variant which Luke and Josh compete in involves 1:10 scale electric off-road buggies, which race around tracks, first qualifying and then going through to finals. The buggies can reach speeds up to 50mph.

Their mother, Adele Holdsworth, aged 47, said: “When they were nine and six years old, my dad got them their first car, he got them into it.”

The boys were obviously quite good at it from the off.

Adele added: “They’re really good at it, they’re now currently sponsored by Schumacher Racing and Hobbywing, going round the country doing national competitions.

“This week in the European Championship they competed in the 2WD competition.

“One came sixth and one came eighth out of 89 racers in Europe. There weren’t as many this year because of Covid.”

She stressed the benefits the sport has brought her sons.

She said: “They’ve made a lot of friends over the years at the races, it gives them a different friend group.”

The older brother, Luke, doesn’t just compete in RC racing but is interested in a career in motorsport.

Adele said: “Luke, the older brother, is 21 years old and is very interested in Formula One.

“He’s just graduated from the University of Bolton in motorsport technology, he got a first last week.”

Luke and Josh had previously travelled to France for the European Championships, aged only 17 and 14 at the time.
